There is no name in the world of modern crossfit more significant than Richard Froning Jr. and Annie Thorisdottir (Annie Thorisdottir). And if almost everything is known about Froning in our time, then Thorisdottir, in view of his significant distance from the ubiquitous American paparazzi, manages to keep his life partially secret. Even having given the palm in CrossFit and having lost the status of “the most prepared woman in the world”, she nevertheless never ceases to amaze her fans with new strength and speed records.
Short biography
Annie Thorisdottir was born in 1989 in Reykjavik. Like many other outstanding athletes from the world of CrossFit, from childhood she showed her penchant for various kinds of competitive disciplines. So, while still at school, the future champion was able to show herself in all her glory when she began to engage in rhythmic gymnastics.
But after 2 years, the gifted girl was lured to the gymnastics section, where she was able to show her first serious achievements, taking prizes in the Icelandic championships for 8 years in a row. Even then, Annie showed herself as an athlete, knowing exactly why she came to the sport - for first places and only for victories.
At the end of her career as a gymnast (due to extreme trauma), Thorisdottir tried herself in ballet and pole vaulting. In the latter sport, she even tried to get into the European Olympic team, but it did not work out.
An interesting fact: despite the extreme trauma of ballet, gymnastics and, even more so, crossfit, Thorisdottir has not had a single serious injury in 15 years in sports.
The girl says that the basis of this approach is the principle of listening to your own body. In particular, when she feels insufficiently prepared for a particular exercise, she reduces the weight on the barbell or completely refuses the approach.
Coming to CrossFit
CrossFit burst into Annie's life out of the blue. In 2009, one of her friends used the name Thorisdottir as an April Fool's joke in CrossFit sports in Iceland.
Upon learning of this, the future champion was not very upset, but simply devoted the offseason to a new sport. And already in the first year she won the Icelandic championship, having only 3 months of preparation and a complete absence of a theoretical base in this sports discipline.
First competition
The first real workout for Thorisdottir was the Crossfit Open qualifier. It was there that she first performed kettlebell swings and pull-ups.
In the same year, in just three months, I prepared for my first crossfit games on a global scale. It was then that Thorisdottir declared herself as an outstanding universal athlete.
Note: in that year, its shape was very different from all subsequent ones. The waist was thinner and the net weight-to-body ratio was much higher. Because of this, many consider 2010-2012 to be the best years of Thorisdottir's career.
Trauma and recovery
In 2013, Annie was unable to defend her title due to a back injury (herniated disc), which she suffered from a violation of technique in the free snatch. The athlete retired during the third week of the five-week open championship. Then she stated that she could not do such basic movements as squats. The injury was so severe that the girl began to fear that she would no longer be able to walk. She spent the rest of the year in a hospital bed recovering from her injury.
In 2015, Thorisdottir won the Open for the second time, showing impressive results after her return to CrossFit and surprising everyone with a new form that marked the peak of her career.
"Trio" Dottir
One of the most interesting "phenomena" of crossfit competitions is the so-called "Dottir" -trio. In particular, these are three Icelandic athletes, who usually shared the prize and near prize places in all competitions, starting in 2012.
Annie Thorisdottir has always been in the first place among them, who quite often won first places in CrossFit games. The second place was always put only slightly inferior to her Sara Sigmundsdottir, who, due to her constant injuries, could not get a form suitable for competition and even missed seasons without completing the general qualification. And the third position in the “trio” has always been occupied by Catherine Tanya Davidsdottir.
All three athletes are from Iceland, but only Thorisdottir remained to play for the team of her home country. Both other athletes changed their region of performance to American.
Thorisdottir and gloss
When, in the 12th year, Thorisdottir first became the champion of the crossfit games, she received two tempting offers from a glossy magazine at once. But she abandoned both of them in view of her shyness and unwillingness to over-publicize her private life.
The first proposal, as the athlete herself says in an interview, came from the American magazine Playboy, which wanted to make a special issue with the most athletic women in the world, in the list of which he wanted to include the CrossFit champion. According to the idea, the magazine was to conduct a photo session with a naked athlete, who had very outstanding forms and truly feminine grace.
The second suggestion was from Muscle & Fitness Hers magazine. But at the last moment, the editors of the magazine on their own abandoned the idea of capturing Thorisdottir on the cover and publishing a long interview with her.
Physical form
With her impressive strength, Thorisdottir remains the most aesthetic and feminine athlete in the non-feminine sport of CrossFit. In particular, with an increase of 170 centimeters, its weight ranges from 64-67 kilograms. For example, in 2017, she entered the competition in a new form (63.5 kk), which, however, did not have the best effect on her strength indicators, but gave an advantage in the speedy execution of the main CrossFit programs.
In addition, it is distinguished by excellent anthropomorphic data:
- height - 1.7 meters;
- waist circumference - 63 cm;
- chest volume: 95 centimeters;
- bicep girth - 37.5 centimeters;
- hips - 100 cm.
In fact, the girl almost reached the ideal, in terms of classical female beauty, “guitar-like” figure - with an extremely thin waist and trained hips, which are only slightly larger than the volume of the chest. CrossFit played a significant role in creating her ideal figure.
Curious facts
Thorisdottir was born to be the best in sports. After all, her official nickname at the competition is called "Tor's Daughter" or "Thor's Daughter".
Despite her impressive CrossFit performance, Thorisdottir has never competed in a powerlifting competition. Nevertheless, she was awarded the category “international master of sports” in absentia, as the federation considered her results sufficient for the weight category (up to 70 kg) to fulfill the standards.
She is the only crossfit athlete to enter the Guinness Book of Records.
Despite her outstanding results, she is not an ardent fan: she does not use hormones, sports nutrition, does not adhere to the Paleolithic diet. Everything is standard - 4 workouts with iron per week and 3 workouts aimed at developing cardio.
Thorisdottir's main principle and motivation is not to win, but to lead a healthy and athletic lifestyle.
According to her, she absolutely does not care what kind of sport to participate in, as long as the preparation for the competition has the advantages of a comprehensive study of the body. It is CrossFit that makes this possible.
According to the athlete herself, after she finally decides to have a family, a child and leave professional sports, she wants to return and take gold at least one more time. And then get back in shape and perform in beach bodybuilding.
At one time, she became the first female athlete in CrossFit, who was able to win absolutely every competition in a season twice in a row.
Guinness record
Annie differs from her fellow CrossFitters in that she beat and set new Guinness records. Her last achievement was thrusters, for which she bypassed the previous record by half.
After completing 36 thrusters with a weight of 30 kilograms on the barbell in just 1 minute. Athletes such as Fronning, Fraser, Davidsdottir and Sigmundsdottir have jokingly tried to repeat this record. None of them managed to come close to the result even in a joking manner.
Fraser showed the closest approximation, making 32 thrusters weighing 45 kilograms in 1:20. All the rest were left far behind.
Of course, this is not at all indicative of Thorisdotter's form, but only an indicator that she specially trained in her favorite thrusters to achieve optimal results.
Best performance
Thorisdottir is one of the fastest and strongest female athletes in the world of CrossFit. Apart from new exercises and complexes that appear every year in the competitive discipline, Annie's classic indicators leave her rivals far behind.

Finally
Despite the fact that Thorisdottir has not won gold medals in CrossFit games for the past 4 years, she is still a CrossFit icon and the hope of all Iceland. Having shown an impressive start, unique physical fitness, and, most importantly, an unbroken spirit, she rightfully deserves the title of “living symbol of CrossFit” along with Froning Jr.
Like all athletes, she followed the Josh Bridges principle, and promised her fans to take first place in 2018. In the meantime, we can cheer and follow her achievements on the girl's pages on Instagramm and Twitter.
