CrossFit is a fairly young sport. In addition, unlike bodybuilding and powerlifting, it has a firm age limit. In particular, an athlete over thirty can rarely enter the professional arena and show peak results. But there were, are and will be exceptions to these rules. But the fact that there is nothing to do in CrossFit after 30 is successfully proven by Rich Froning and Jason Khalipa, who retired from the individual tests.
So, thanks to this, they can change their training plan, making training more classic, with an emphasis on the strength component. However, this does not negate the fact that these are the best of the best who have stood the test of time, injury and age.
Jason Kalipa is one of the biggest and most controversial athletes in CrossFit. Everyone is amazed by both his physical form and his inability to take first places for almost 6 years in a row, despite impressive strength and speed indicators in almost all exercises.
Biography
Jason Kalipa was born in 1984. In his youth, he was a very thin boy, who did not at all think about serious sports, which clearly distinguishes him from all young talents. Nevertheless, at the age of 14, the athlete went to the gym, impressed by the performance of Ronnie Coleman, a police officer and bodybuilder. Then Kalipa firmly decided that he would become as big and ascend the sports Olympus himself. However, the next two years of training did not bring much results. During this time, the athlete recovered from 65 to 72 kilograms and got stuck in strength results.
In 2000, Kalipa was first noticed using anabolic steroids, thanks to which his progress got off the ground. In the following years, he actively participated in lifting and bodybuilding competitions, taking first and second places everywhere.
However, Jason's position was such that he flatly refused to take growth hormone, which athletes of that period began to indulge in. Because of this, the road to professional bodybuilding remained closed for him. Nevertheless, the athlete did not give up and tried himself in new and new regional competitions. But then in his career there was a forced break - Jason had problems with the endocrine system. The athlete spent almost a year in rehabilitation - he was treated with potent substances that were supposed to normalize the production of his hormones and help avoid surgery due to the onset of gynecomastia.
And here the athlete again defeated everyone, successfully emerging from this difficult test as a winner. Since then, he has reduced the dosage of drugs and seriously thought about changing the competitive sport.
Crossfit athlete career
By 2007, the bodybuilder, who had been training in natural for a year already, caught the eye of a gym in which CrossFit boxing was practiced. Seeing this as a new opportunity to shock your muscles. Jason decided to come to grips with this sport and after 3 months he finally gave up bodybuilding.
First victory
In the first year, he immediately distinguished himself with a big scandal. The drugs that the athlete used as a recovery for his endocrine system gave a large synthesis of his own testosterone, and the athlete had to provide medical certificates proving that he did not take doping and anabolics. And only after passing additional tests, Kalipa was allowed to compete.
It was not in vain that Jason fought so hard - at his very first CrossFit competitions in 2008, he took first place.
The following years were not so impressive for the athlete. In particular, due to the change in priorities in the complexes and the emphasis on endurance and rowing, he lost the competition twice, ending them quite far from the first place. Well, when such titans as Richard Froning and Mat Fraser entered the arena, Calipe had no choice but to leave individual performances.
Withdrawal from individual competitions
In 2015, after losing and losing to Mat Fraser by a wide margin, Kalipa decided to retire from the individual competition. He did it for a reason. The athlete himself will voice two main reasons for his decision.
I really want to continue to compete with my main rival - Richard Froning. His retirement from the individual competition made it simply impossible. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. I am very strong, but not fast enough for a new crossfit. Team sport allows you to combine efforts, leveling the weaknesses of athletes and increasing their advantages.
Be that as it may, the experts who were talking about the decline of Jason Kalipa's career were seriously mistaken. As part of working with his new team, the athlete in the team competition was able to defeat the “Crossfit Mayhem” team, which put a fat three dots in the fight with his main opponent.
Interesting Facts
In 2008, Jason Kalipa was able to complete the Miyagi complex, due to which he won the competition. He was the only athlete who was able to fully compete after doing the following exercises:
- 50 deadlifts (61/43);
- 50 swings of two weights (24/16);
- 50 push-ups;
- 50 jerks (61/43)
- 50 pull-ups;
- 50 kettlebell flips (24/16);
- 50 boxing jumps (60/50);
- 50 wall climbs;
- 50 knees to elbows;
- 50 double jumps on the rope.
After leaving the individual standings, Kalipa gained a lot in muscle mass, and began to stand out among his teammates, increasing strength at the expense of speed. Nevertheless, this approach paid off, and today his team took crossfit games impudently twice, killing all competitors, showing results a cut above.
Kalipa is a Level 2 Official Trainer and has his own affiliate. Coaching skills are great at helping prepare many athletes, some of whom have already competed in the 2016 CrossFit Games.
After the end of his individual career, he organized a network of his own gyms, and entered into partnerships, becoming an endorser of the Optimum nutrition sports nutrition.
Kalipa is a versatile athlete, as in addition to CrossFit he sometimes takes part in Powerlifting competitions.

Despite his impressive crossfit weight, Jason Kalipa can show not only his phenomenal strength, but also amazing endurance. In particular, he shows results at his own limits every time. And although he is inferior in the speed of execution of some complexes, his results in strength and endurance complexes are beyond the understanding of even the current champion Fraser.

Physical form
Whoever says anything, however, old man Kalipa is one of the biggest athletes in CrossFit. His phenomenal weight, shoulder and forearm training give him a huge advantage in strength training. At the same time, own weight is an obstacle for some unloved complexes. In many ways, people consider the huge forms of Kalipa to be the result of long-term consumption of steroids, but this is fundamentally wrong, since even long-term use of anabolic drugs has its disadvantages and kickbacks. Just look at the former Olympia champions and how much they lost weight after retiring from professional sports. Kalipa manages to maintain his shape without additional pharmacology, which speaks of his incredible genetics and the right approach to training.
- height: 175 centimeters;
- weight: 97 kilograms;
- biceps volume: 51 centimeters;
- chest volume: 145 centimeters;
- thigh volume: 65 centimeters;
- waist: 78 centimeters.
In fact, he is a classic bodybuilder. After leaving individual competitions, his weight exceeded a hundred, his waist grew, and he generally ceased to worry about the dryness of his own body, working like a real powerlifter for results.
Jason and steroids
Jason has repeatedly been accused of using steroids in his workouts. In the early games (2007 and 2008), the athlete even almost got disqualified when a doping test revealed a threefold excess of testosterone relative to the norm. However, despite this, Kalipa was still allowed to compete, and he was even able to take a prize.
In recent years, the athlete's volumes have decreased, and his testosterone has returned to normal. In response to all the accusations, the athlete claims that he took testosterone boosters and even sat on several courses, but all this was before joining professional CrossFit. In particular, he spent the last course with turinabol in the offseason, preparing for the city bodybuilding competition. But he did not expect that the residual effect, even with the correct PCT, would persist for a year.
Many experts believe that large volumes of Jason Kalipa are a leftover from taking anabolic steroids.
Indeed, despite the fact that he stopped taking the course almost 10 years ago, he did not reduce either the intensity or the number of testosterone boosters. And this, in turn, leads to a change in the balance of male hormones, which can lead to erroneous results on doping control.
However, Kalipa himself claims that in recent years he has not taken any supplements other than federally approved supplements and sports nutrition. This is proved by the latest results of a doping test, where the level of androgenic hormones is even lower than it was 5-6 years ago.
If in 2008 it was still possible to accuse Jason Kalipa of using prohibited substances and bypassing doping control, then in 2017 he is one of the cleanest and most honest athletes who, although he no longer takes prizes, but still remains one of the best athletes in the old guard of CrossFit.
Finally
Today Jason Kalipa, despite being “old enough” for CrossFit, continues to compete. He fully believes that after the current champion leaves, he will be able to make it to the top three in CrossFit at least once. Until then, he will compete, compete and compete.
In addition, a decrease in the intensity of training in recent years in the athlete cannot be noted.
First, he is the manager of three fitness clubs focused on training new crossfit athletes. Secondly, he moved from individual to team crossfit. And, most importantly, he has a wife and two children who support him in absolutely everything and consider him their champion.
Despite everything, Jason Kalipa still devotes up to 6 hours a day to training complexes, which is the norm for the modern CrossFit athlete.
Calipa's team beat Froning's team in 2016, so Jason worked together to complete his task and beat the champion. Now Jason also leads an active blogging life - on his Instagram and Twitter pages, you can find a lot of video tutorials on performing various crossfit exercises with valuable comments.
