When considering sports nutrition for muscle growth, one cannot fail to mention one of the most important components that can really push you off the ground. Namely, nitrogen donors. Oxide substitutes, as they are also called, are not only an excellent tool for muscle growth, but also an excellent stimulant. Whether the latter factor somehow influences everyday life, and is it possible to get into unpleasant curiosities because of this - we will consider separately.
General information
In order to find out what nitric oxide donors are and how they work, we will plunge into the biochemical processes taking place in our body in order to fully profile the activity of nitrogen oxides.
The fact is that our blood has oxygen cells, thanks to which the muscles feed the blood, creating anaerobic glycolysis during exercise. However, these cells are of limited size, which reduces the body's ability to carry oxygen for a long time. In addition, these cells are very often damaged by the influence of large amounts of sugar.
Nitrogen donors force the body to make (or borrow) its own nitrogen oxide. First of all, it binds oxygen cells, which, in turn, leads to the fact that a full-fledged cell with oxide takes the place of a cell with oxygen. The NO2 molecule is larger than the O2 molecule, therefore, it stretches the size of the fibrillar junction without destroying it.
Muscle tissue perceives oxide as an analogue of pure oxygen, completely metabolizing it. As a result, nitrogenous fertilizers begin to accumulate in muscle tissues.
Taken together, all these actions lead to:
- Increased blood pressure;
- Expansion of the main transport channels, in the form of elastic stretching of them with blood;
- Improving the work of the heart muscle.
But how does this all relate to the world of sporting achievement?

What is it for?
What are nitrogen donors used for, and why do they go to the pharmacy?
- Pumping.
- Recovery.
- Better oxygen sensitivity.
First of all, drugs associated with replenishing the level of nitrogen in the blood affect pumping. We talked about the mechanism of this a little earlier. How pumping affects the performance of an athlete, and whether it does at all, should be considered separately.
However, the second unexpected benefit from stimulants of self-nitrogen production is accelerated recovery. It's all about the size of the blood cells. With microtraumas (micro breaks that appear during training), the following occurs:
- Reduction of microtrauma;
- Full blood saturation with all nutrients.
Accordingly, we come to the conclusion that blood enters the injury faster, which accelerates the onset of the healing process, and the pump and oxygen saturation lead to a rapid delivery of nutrients to start the synthesis of new muscle fibers. It is clear that this is possible only with hypercaloricity and appropriate protein intake.
Well, and the last effect is a better oxygen sensitivity. The thing is that oxygen, bound by nitrogen atoms, decomposes unevenly, and forces the body to release it from the defective compound. As a result, the muscles learn to use the reserves they receive more efficiently, and most importantly, they are able to release oxygen even from the combined one enriched with carbon.
Regarding the susceptibility of muscles to oxygen, it is worth mentioning here that, despite a general increase in working capacity, local hypoxia is formed in the body, due to the fact that the body cannot simultaneously release nitrogen from oxygen. This helps to achieve the effect of oxygen starvation, creating additional aerobic activity. A similar effect, albeit to a lesser extent, occurs when training in a training mask.

What are they?
It is important to understand that not all pills are created equal. Even helpers in the synthesis of their own nitrogen fall into different categories. Their total effect remains approximately at the same level, however, due to a different mechanism of action, you can get slightly different results, and most importantly, stop some side effects.
- Stimulants of the production of their own nitrogen. Treat drugs such as Via Gra. This is the classic way to increase blood pressure and get all the basic benefits of nitrogen donors.
- Nitrogen. Have a shorter-term effect. They are usually not used to accelerate oxygen sensitivity or to increase recovery rates. Instead, they are used as a booster pump. It follows from this that they are used right before the start of training. And their validity expires within a few hours after the end of the workout.
- Arginase suppression. Arginase suppression is an unusual classic solution to the problem. Instead of adding new stimulants to the body, we simply block the hydration and excretion of old ones, in particular L-arginine. What does this lead to? On the one hand, the body stops excreting excess nitrogen. On the other hand, after discontinuation of the drug, it will lead to hyperfunction of the glands responsible for the metabolism of nitrogenous compounds.
- Complex preparations.
The connection between strength and sexual performance
Since nitric oxide donors are powerful sexual stimulants, their capabilities in the restoration of motor tissues have not been paid attention for a long time. Chenelifrin and Via Gra, the two main competitors, are believed to be powerful aphrodisiacs.
This is fundamentally wrong. All that Via Gra does is to increase overall blood pressure, saturating the circulatory system with nitrogen oxides. From the point of view of sexual performance, this allows you to stop venous leakage, which is one of the most common causes of malaise in bed, and, therefore, to expand the blood channel, thereby prolonging and improving the erectile performance of a man in bed.
At the same time, if the problem is on a mental level, or is associated with a lack of levels of sex hormones (or sexual secretions), then viagra and any other nitric oxide donor will not help in any way.
You don't have to worry about taking Via Gras substitutes for athletic performance. At the end of the course of taking medications, you will not become impotent. In addition, you will not suffer from constant erection on public transport, and, therefore, you will not get into unpleasant and awkward situations.
The only side effect that can be a problem after refusing to use nitric oxide donors for sports purposes is a psychological effect, which is sometimes sufficient to cause problems in spicy situations.
How to use?
After we figured out the mechanism of the effect of nitrogen on our body and understand that nitrogen donors cannot cause tangible harm to our body, then it is worthwhile to figure out how to take it correctly.
Note: very often NO2 donors are included in pre-workout complexes, which increases blood pumping with an overall improvement in well-being. So, nitrogen donors, it is better not to use and not take into account when taking a course.
The course of admission is designed for a 4-week cycle, after which you need to rest for at least 1 week.
A week | A drug | Daily dosage | Time of receipt | Natural products which contain |
During a 4-week course | L-arginine | About 1 gram | Together with BCAAs or with food | Watermelon, turmeric, hot pepper |
2nd week | Viagra | Half a tablet once a day | Together with BCAAs or with food | No natural analogues |
3rd and 4th week | Cinelephrine | Half a tablet once a day | Together with BCAAs or with food | No natural analogues |
For a smooth exit from the NO2 course | Nitrate-rich foods | Up to 400 grams of vegetables | Together with BCAAs or with food | Any products grown on nitrogen fertilizers |
What to combine with?
Naturally, nitrogen donors are not used for drying, due to the fact that, like creatine phosphate, they have a negative side effect associated with flooding the athlete with water. And yet, what do nitrogen donors combine with?
Type of drug | What for? |
Gainer | To increase blood receptivity to nutrients in the sports mixture, with an increase in energy efficiency with a general decrease in energy consumption. |
Protein blend | To increase blood receptivity to nutrients in the sports mixture, with an increase in energy efficiency with a general decrease in energy consumption. |
Creatine | To increase the pumping effect during training, it perfectly helps to create myofibrillar hyperplasia, and to keep blood in the muscles for a longer time, which will improve their oxygen capacity in the future. |
Carnitine | Enhances the energetic effect of this drug, reducing side effects and increasing overall blood flow while maintaining energy. Helps to completely turn off glycogen and turn on fat storage in muscle tissues. |
Caffeine | Enhances the energetic effect of this drug, reducing side effects and increasing overall blood flow while maintaining energy. Helps to completely turn off glycogen and turn on fat storage in muscle tissues. |
Stearic fat | To increase blood receptivity to nutrients in the sports mixture, with an increase in energy efficiency with a general decrease in energy consumption. |
Omega 3 fatty acids | To increase blood receptivity to nutrients in the sports mixture, with an increase in energy efficiency with a general decrease in energy consumption. |
Testosterone stimulants | In this case, nitrogen donors quickly saturate the main organ responsible for stimulating the natural production of testosterone with blood, and maintain a constant blood pressure there, which accelerates the production of the hormone by about 20-30 percent. |
Side effects
Among the officially approved non-doping sports nutrition, nitrogen donors have their place in the athlete's food chain. Primarily due to a very large number of side effects. If we consider in fact, then nitrogenous assistants are rather sports pharmacology at the level of drugs that stimulate the production of their own testosterone.
If the recommended dosage of any drug that stimulates the body to produce additional compounds of nitrogen oxide is exceeded, the following side effects are possible:
- Headache;
- Constant dizziness;
- Increased need for sugar;
- Slight hypoxia;
- Increased pumping during normal routine activities;
- Decreased stamina;
- Increased libido;
- Expansion of the vessels of the brain;
- Increased blood pressure;
- Increased venous pressure;
- Relaxation of the soft muscles of the heart tissue of the ventricle.
But, perhaps, the most important side effect, as odd as it may sound, was a deteriorated recovery. The thing is that nitrogen donors can only stimulate micro recovery, and if you have a more serious injury (dislocation, fracture, cut), then, due to the saturation of blood with additional nitrogen, oxidative processes in the damaged areas cannot fully pass. cycle, which slows down the recovery somewhat. Therefore, if you are seriously injured during training, it is better to reduce the dosage of Viagra, or completely cancel its course until complete recovery.

To summarize
Nitrogen donors are a very specific drug used for specific purposes. Even in professional bodybuilding, its use is not always justified and necessary. However, if your goal is to improve the energy efficiency of muscle contractions (which is especially important for CrossFit), you can try a different donor course.
It is best to start trying with arginine, which exhibits basic qualities brighter than others, and is almost devoid of the disadvantages of stimulants of its own nitrogen production.
