Currently, it is not a secret for anyone that athletes, famous and famous all over the world for their sports achievements, are, in addition to everything, and people are quite rich. They participate in commercials, receive royalties for their performances both on the sports arena and outside it.
And, of course, everyone, even the most eminent world sports stars, understand that their sports career and high achievements are not eternal, and therefore it is necessary to take care of their future and find a different way of making money than participating in competitions. Of course, this is mainly coaching.
Let's take, for example, our Russian athletes. Basically, if not “stars, then their income is the salary from the state, which they receive through the respective federations or sports clubs they represent. Some, for example, footballers, may be lucky and receive good money from private companies under whose patronage the club is located.
In addition to the basic salary, the income of athletes can be from:
- business, both your own and, for example, wives,
- participation in show business,
- coaching work,
- prize money that is paid by the same state for success in competitions,
- contracts with various advertising firms.
In addition to professionals, there are also many amateur athletes. Let's take, for example, amateur running, which is gaining more and more popularity and is actively developing in our country. A huge number of long-distance running competitions, half marathons and marathons such as "White Nights" are held in Russia throughout the year, and athletes of absolutely any level of training can take part in them.
However, it is worth understanding here that money rules the world. Therefore, both the organizers and some of the participants in such amateur running competitions are likely to receive not only spiritual, but also material benefits from such running competitions.
Can you make money by running?
The answer is yes! And sometimes it doesn't matter if you are a professional athlete at the moment, or left the sport during your school years.
Professional and experienced athletes
Basically, professional athletes are paid for the excellent results shown during the competition. Running for them is work. You can also make good money on commercials, for example, in the advertising of sportswear and sports nutrition.
Seasoned athletes, as a rule, become coaches: they teach both in sports sections funded by the state, and open their own private schools or give individual lessons. They can also take part in sports, for example, marathon distances, claiming to receive a prize fund.
Lovers
Amateur athletes to make money on sports, including. On the run it is quite difficult. Unless to purposefully participate in competitions with a prize fund, where the opponents are known and you can definitely overtake them and win a prize (and therefore get a cash prize).
Basically, amateur athletes not only do not earn from competitions, on the contrary, they pay entrance fees to participate in them (and also pay travel to the start site, accommodation, meals, insurance, equipment, and so on). However, it is safe to say that with such races they can earn peace of mind and moral satisfaction from participating in competitions.
Long distances
How do athletes benefit?
Professional athletes perceive marathons and half marathons as a source of income, for them participation in such distances is work. It is usually not easy for amateurs to make money in running competitions.
Amateur athletes can be conventionally divided into two groups: those who participate in competitions solely in order to win the marathon and receive a prize. The second type includes athletes who run just for fun, and the prize money is not important to them.
However, it can be noted that some athletes who have not reached great heights can still earn money from participating in running competitions. Moreover, the age of the runner and the presence of some kind of regalia usually does not matter - they can be completely different. There are quite a few sub-level runners out there who have learned to make money by running.
And, surprisingly, there are a lot of veterans among such athletes. As a rule, they are familiar with the level and rules of each competition that is held near their place of residence. And they try to perform only where they will win a prize with 100% confidence. It would seem that this is not entirely fair, but the participation of such athletes strengthens any competition and helps to draw attention to them.
As a result, both the participants and the organizers win.
However, it should be noted that in most cases the prize money is quite modest. Sometimes this money can be recouped only by the road to the starts and preparation for them. Therefore, sometimes it is difficult to talk about such races as a full-fledged income.
But where solid prize money is at stake, the level of the participating athletes is quite high. There you can compete for more significant amounts. For example, a winner of large marathon distances can become the owner of an amount of several thousand (and even tens of thousands) rubles, as well as valuable prizes from sponsors. However, in order to become a winner in such competitions, you should be, at a minimum, a master of the port.
Hence the conclusion: it is difficult to make decent money in amateur competitions. The exception is large tournaments where professional athletes run. And the rest, at best, will recoup their trip at the expense of the prize money, or even go into a "material minus". However, they receive the most important thing - moral satisfaction from participation.
The mass races are organized by ordinary amateurs who do not come to the competitions to earn money (perhaps it does not even occur to them, because the main thing for many is just to reach the finish line).
Participation is important for them, for this they pay for travel, accommodation, meals and an entry fee. Of course, they also have a competitive spirit. Finishing, they will be happy to tell how they overtook the main rival at a distance, or how they improved their last year's result. But the most important thing for such people is the very fact of participation.
How do organizers benefit?
The organizers can be roughly divided into three categories:
- state,
- commercial,
- non-commercial.
The first are, as a rule, various regional sports committees and federations. They, having received an order from above, organize the run (usually it is without an entry fee, for everyone, and the participants stay for free). Competitions, as a rule, are held at a fairly high level, there are judges and volunteers. And also prizes are provided - both winners and incentive.
By the way, such high-level tournaments, as a rule, are held in large cities. In provincial towns, the organization of competitions is sometimes just for show, at a low level. Although - not always, and everywhere there are both good and bad exceptions.
Commercial race organizers tend to make money out of it. This is mainly due to the infusion of sponsor money. Usually, commercial competitions are well organized, as a rule, they have an entry fee (sometimes quite impressive). And both beginners and quite eminent athletes can perform (they, as mentioned above, are attracted, among other things, by the opportunity to get prize money).
The organizers of the so-called "non-commercial tournaments" are usually the same amateur athletes. They organize competitions for themselves, for friends, for the same caring people, often on sheer enthusiasm or with small financial investments. As a rule, organizers find it difficult to make money on such tournaments. Everything is done for fun.
Advertising
Many athletes (usually active professional athletes) earn money by participating in commercials. For example, advertising sportswear, footwear or other equipment.
The higher the level of an athlete, the more reputable firms attract him as the “face” of their company. And they pay a lot of money.
Coaching work
This type of earnings is for experienced athletes who have completed their careers. As a rule, the majority of athletes, after completing their performances, leave for coaching. They can teach in various state institutions and schools, for example, SDYUSHOR. Or they can organize their own private schools for teaching young talents or even conduct individual training - both with children and adults.
As a rule, a higher education is required for legalized teaching. Therefore, many athletes, during or after their sports career, study at universities and academies of physical culture and sports.
The more eminent an athlete is, the more money he can earn thanks to his coaching work. Of course, in small and state institutions, coaches can teach not for a large salary, however, each of the coaches, even if at one time he did not achieve great sports results and did not set world records, can bring up hundreds and thousands of little stars, one of which can grow into a real world-class star.
Coaching requires a special talent - teaching. It is not enough to be the best athlete. You need to be both a psychologist and, in fact, a second dad or mom for a young athlete.
Marathons around the world where you can break the bank
So is it possible to make money on serious and world famous marathons? The unequivocal answer to this question is yes. Provided that you:
- were born in a country close to the equator,
- constantly exhaust yourself with regular training,
- think little about the consequences for your health.
Yes, unfortunately, these are the principles you need to adhere to if you are going to earn prize money in world famous marathons.
First, you will have to do everything for your hard earned money, and only if you develop a name for yourself, you can have a personal manager who will make trips for you to serious competitions in the major cities of the rich countries of the world.
So, we present you a list of distances of 42 kilometers where you can "break the bank"
- 1 place. Dubai Marathon.
The most popular competition among the stars of world athletics. Here, the winner will be paid the largest fee in the world: about 200 thousand US dollars (amounts may change annually).
- 2nd place. Boston, Chicago and New York marathons.
All of these major competitions are held in the United States, and the winner of them can count on prize money in the amount of $ 100,000.
- 3rd place. Marathons held in Asia.
For example, in Seoul, Tokyo or Hong Kong. The prize money here will also delight the winners, and the heat during the overcoming the distance is better endured during the week on other continents.
- 4th place. London or Berlin marathons.
The organizers are less generous here than their American, Asian or Arab counterparts. First-time runners on these 42 kilometers will receive approximately $ 50,000.
As we have seen, with the help of running, it is quite possible to earn money either for experienced athletes and professional athletes, or for those organizers who have found good sponsors and organized high-level competitions.
In all other cases, amateur running competitions are usually organized to support the development of mass sports, and their participants are ordinary people who do not run for money, fame or prizes, but simply for the sake of participation and their own pleasure.
