A question that is as important as a question selection of clothing for running in winter. After all, improper breathing in cold weather can cause colds, or even burn the lungs. How exactly to breathe in winter under different temperature conditions, we will consider in the article.
Breathing technique
Regardless of the frost boldly breathe through your nose and mouth at the same time. Don't be afraid to get cold in your throat. With a slight frost, the air has time to warm up due to the fact that the body is heated up during running. And in case of severe frost, you must resort to using a scarf or balaclava.
It is possible to chill your throat or overcool only if you, at the beginning, warm up the body by starting to run, and then, get tired, for example, and go on foot. Then the body begins to cool down quickly and this can cause colds.
Of course, breathing only through your nose will allow you to run with minimal chance of getting a cold throat. However, due to the fact that you will not be able to run at your average pace with such breathing, since you simply will not have enough oxygen due to the low patency of the nasal canal, the body will also be warmed up worse. And you can just freeze even while running.
Remember, breathe both in summer and in winter it is necessary with both nose and mouth. This is the correct breathing that all professional runners and serious amateurs practice.
How to breathe at temperatures below -15 degrees.
Of course I would not advise run in such a cold temperature... But if you really want to go for a run, then it is advisable that you either put on a balaclava and breathe through it, or wrap a scarf around your mouth and nose, and also breathe through the fabric. But if you are winding a scarf, then you do not need to wind it tightly. Allow about 1 cm of space between the scarf and your lips. This space will give freedom to breathing. In this case, you will capture the air already warmer.
With this severe frost it is very important not to overcool and run all the way with a feeling of heat. As soon as you feel a slight coolness. Return home immediately. When your body begins to cool down from the inside. Then the air. Even if you inhale it exclusively through your nose, it will not have time to warm up enough. And you are very likely to get sick.
