In a sport as young as CrossFit, the Olympus pedestal is not as strong as in other disciplines. Champions replace one another, until a real monster appears in the arena, tearing everyone and everywhere. The first such monster was Rich Froning - who still unofficially holds the title of "the coolest and most prepared athlete in the world." But since his departure from the personal competition, a new star, Matt Fraser, has appeared in the world.
Quietly and without unnecessary pathos, Matthew took over the title of the most powerful man in the world in 2016. However, he has been performing quite well in CrossFit for 4 years now, and each time he shows a new level of strength and speed achievements, which surprises his rivals a lot. In particular, the previous champion - Ben Smith, despite all his efforts, every year lags behind Fraser more and more. And this may indicate that the athlete still has a large margin of safety, which he did not fully reveal, and more and more personal records can await him ahead.
Short biography
Like all reigning champions, Fraser is a fairly young athlete. He was born in 1990 in the United States of America. Already in 2001, Fraser entered the weightlifting competition for the first time. It was then, as a teenager, that he realized that his future path is directly related to the world of sports achievements.
After graduating from high school with very average results, Matthew, nevertheless, received a sports scholarship to college and, most importantly, his place on the Olympic team. Having missed the games of 2008, Fraser trained hard until he was seriously injured in one of the training sessions.
The path to crossfit
After being injured, the doctors finally put an end to the future champion. Fraser underwent two spinal surgeries. His discs were fractured, and shunts were installed in his back, which were supposed to support the mobility of the vertebrae. Almost a year - the athlete was confined to a wheelchair, fighting every day for the very opportunity to move on his feet and lead a normal life.
When the athlete finally overcame his injury, he decided to return to the world of big sport. Since the place in the Olympic team was lost for him, the young man decided to restore his sports reputation, first by winning regional competitions. To do this, he enrolled in a nearby gym, which turned out to be not a typical fitness center, but a crossfit boxing section.
Studying in the same room with athletes of related subjects, he quickly realized the advantages of a new sport and, already 2 years later, pushed the reigning champions to the CrossFit Olympus.
Why CrossFit?
Fraser is a phenomenal CrossFit athlete. He achieved his impressive form almost from scratch, with a sedentary spine and a long break from physical activity. Today everyone knows his name. And in almost every interview he is asked why he did not return to weightlifting.
Fraser himself responds to this as follows.
Weightlifting is an Olympic sport. And, like any other power sport, there is a fair amount of behind-the-scenes politics, implying doping and many other unpleasant aspects that are not directly related to sports, but can affect your results. What I like about CrossFit is that I have really become stronger, more enduring and more mobile. And most importantly, no one is forcing me to use doping.
That being said, Fraser thanks CrossFit for his focus on developing endurance and speed. Exercise mechanics are also important in this sport, which can significantly reduce the load on the spine.
Already in 2017, he became an official sports nutrition endorser, which allows the athlete not to worry about funding and looking for additional income on the side. Thanks to participation in promotions, the athlete earns good money and may not worry if he does not break the prize fund in competitions, but simply continue to practice his favorite sport, surrendering to it completely.
At the same time, Fraser also thanks his weightlifting past, which now allows him to achieve impressive results in the power all-around. In particular, he always emphasizes that the fundamentals of technique and the inherent strength of the ligaments acquired by him in the previous sport, allows him to easily master new exercises and take power records.
Knowing how to properly lift the bar so that nothing gets in the way of your legs and back, you are guaranteed to achieve more success. - Mat Fraser
Sports achivments
The 27-year-old's athletic performance is impressive and makes him a serious competitor to other athletes.
Program | index |
Squat | 219 |
Push | 170 |
jerk | 145 |
Pull-ups | 50 |
Run 5000 m | 19:50 |
His performance in the "Fran" and "Grace" complexes also leaves no doubt about the deservedness of the champion title. Specifically, “Fran” is done in 2:07 and “Grace” in 1:18. Fraser himself promised to improve the results in both programs by at least 20% by the end of 2018, and judging by his intense training, he may well keep his promise.
New Year 17 uniform
Despite his weightlifting specialization, Fraser showed a fundamentally new quality physical form in 2017. In particular, many experts noted its phenomenal drying. This year, while maintaining all the strength indicators, Matt performed for the first time in a weight of 6 kilograms less than in the past, which allowed him to significantly increase the strength / mass ratio and show what the athlete's endurance margin really is.
Before the start of the competition, many believed that Fraser was using drugs and fat burners. To which the athlete himself joked and easily passed all the doping tests.
Specialization
Fraser's main specialization is precisely the indicators of strength endurance. In particular, if we consider the execution time of his programs, then they are at the level of Fronning in the best years, and only slightly inferior in execution speed to the silver medalist of the last games, Ben Smith. But as for his jumps, jerks and jerks - here Fraser leaves behind any athlete. The difference in the lifted kilograms is measured not in units but in tens.
And at the same time, Fraser himself claims that his strength indicators are far from the maximum possible, which will allow him to keep his first place in all sports disciplines in the crossfit world for more than one year.
Crossfit results
Matt Fraser has been competing in sports since his return to heavy sports. Back in 2013, he finished 5th in the northeastern competition, and finished 20th in the open games. Since then, he has improved his results every year.
For the last 2 years, the athlete has been holding the individual championship at crossfit games and is not going to give it to Ben Smitt.

Matt Fraser & Rich Fronning: Should There Be a Battle?
Richard Fronning is considered by many CrossFit fans to be the greatest athlete of the sport. After all, from the very inception of this sports discipline, Fronning has won magnificent victories and produced phenomenal results, showing the body's working capacity on the verge of the capabilities of the human body.
With the arrival of Matt Fraser and the departure of Richard from individual competition, many began to worry about the question - will there be a battle between these two CrossFit titans? To this, both athletes respond that they are not averse to competing in a friendly atmosphere, which they do regularly, indulging in other entertainments along the way.
Nothing is known about the results of the "friendly" competitions, as well as whether they were at all. But both athletes have great respect for each other and even train together. If, nevertheless, we compare the current performance of the athletes, then the superiority in strength indicators is clearly with Fraser. At the same time, Fronning successfully proves its speed and endurance, informally updating the results in all programs.
In any case, Fronning is still not going to return to personal competitions, arguing that he wants to show a fundamentally new level of preparation, to which he strives, but is not yet ready to show himself. In team competitions, the athlete has already shown how much he has grown in recent years.
Finally
Today Matt Fraser is officially considered the strongest competitor in all crossfit competitions in the world. He regularly updates his records and proves to everyone that the limits of the human body are much greater than anyone might think. At the same time, he is quite modest and says that he still has much to strive for.
You can also follow the sports achievements and success of a young athlete on the pages of his social networks Twitter or Instagram, where he regularly publishes the results of his workouts, talks about sports nutrition, and, most importantly, speaks openly about all the experiments that help increase his endurance and strength.
